Qualification minima and experience
Essential
General Practitioners must be registered with the General Medical Council both on the main register and on the GMC GP Register without Restrictions. They must be registered with a Primary Care Trust (PCT) and on the Performer’s List for that PCT. They must also possess a Certificate of Prescribed Experience (now Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT)) or Equivalent Experience (Certificate of Eligibility of GP Registration (CEGPR)) unless they meet one of the exemptions listed. A copy of the Doctor(s) Fitness to Practise declaration must be evidenced to the Authority prior to any GP undertaking duties under the Contract. Previous emergency care/response experience would be an advantage. If a doctor is to be used for airfield cover, they must either hold the Diploma in Aviation Medicine or have completed the RAF IMO Aviation Medicine Course.
GPs must bring with them to their assignments a Controlled Drugs (CD) Prescription Pad issued to them by their registered PCT.
GPs must also provide a copy of an in date annual appraisal either from within a PCT or the DMS appraisal framework. Proof of sufficient Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as well as Basic Life Support (BLS) and Manual Handling training being undertaken at appropriate intervals is also required.
GPs are required to be appropriately indemnified with a Defence Medical Society.
Exemptions
He/she possesses: a Certificate of Specific Training or a Certificate of Acquired Rights in General Medical Practice awarded in one of the member states of the European Economic Area (EEA) other than the UK.
He/she was a Principal in National Health Service (NHS) Practice on 15 Feb 81.
He/she was, on the 15 February 1981, serving in the Defence Medical Services in a capacity which could be regarded as equivalent to that of a Principal in General Practice in the NHS, and is in possession of a statement from the Director General of the Medical Services to that effect.
He/she was a Principal in the NHS General Practice before 15 February 1981 and returned to the Medical List of a Health Authority or Health Board as a Principal General in the NHS before 15 February 1990.
He/she holds a recognised primary medical qualification awarded in one of the member states of the EEA, other than the UK, entitling them to be fully registered under Section 3 of the Medical Act 1983, and who was established in the UK on the 31 December 1994.
Desirable
Previous experience of working with MOD.
Previous emergency care/response experience.
Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP) and/or Diploma of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (DFSRH)
Diploma in Occupational Medicine or Sports Medicine.
